  2. Cardinal Directions • In order to give someone directions, to be prepared for driving your own car or to read maps effectively, you need to know the standard starting directions. These directions are called cardinal directions or points. • In a clockwise direction they are: North, East, South and West.

  4. Compass Rose Directions Sometimes, cardinal directions are not specific enough. When more detailed directions are needed, use compass rose directions.

  6. Bearings • Compass Rose directions also have a degree measurement called a “bearing”. There are 360 degrees of direction because the Earth is a sphere.
