EUDAT Building a Sustainable European Collaborative Data Infrastructure http://www.eudat.eu/ Marcin Ostasz Barcelona Supercomputing Centre Centre Nacional de Supercomputació Catalunya, Spain
Why EUDAT? • European data infrastructure abounds: • ESO, ESA, EBI, CERN, EURO-VO, GENESI-DR, Geo-Seas, HELIO, IMPACT, METAFOR, PESI, SEALS, … • There are challenges: • Compatibility, interoperability, cross-discipline, sustainability, trust …and opportunities: • Synergies do exist! • Common requirements generic services (provided in a sustainable way)
Benefits of a CDI • Enables innovativemulti-disciplinary data-intensiveresearch • Ensures wide access to and preservation of data in a sustainableway • Introduces economies of scale and cost-efficiency
What needs to be done? User Requirements – core v. additional requirements Technical Layer Sustainability Model – including a cost model Rolling Plan
Sustainability Principles (in progress) Data deposited with the EUDAT CDI will be preserved in perpetuity. Data are best curated in their own communities. Access to data in the EUDAT CDI in free at the point of use. Interoperability between community-focused repositories is essential to sustainability. For an EUDAT community repository to be designated a TDR, it follows that EUDAT services and infrastructure must be a suitable target for "TDR outsourcing (TDR = Trustworthy Digital Repository)
