  2. DEMOGRAPHICS • Roosevelt Middle School - 1 of 3 middle schools in the Williamsport Area School District, Williamsport, Pennsylvania • Enrollment - 420 students • Economically Disadvantaged Level - 80% • Minority Level - 45% • Special Needs Student Level - 33%

  3. OUR JOURNEY • RMS state math proficiency level in 2001 = 30%. • RMS today’s math proficiency level = 72%. • Roosevelt Middle School was placed on PA “School Improvement” list. • Administration pushed for professional development of “Best Practices.”

  4. INITIATIVES • Curriculum alignment • New text book series: • Glencoe - Middle School Math • McDougal Littell - Passport to Algebra & Geometry • Addition of a second enriched class • Math moment: • School-wide televised math problem during the last 5 years • Last year, we added math vocabulary from our state glossary

  5. INITIATIVES • Hands on Equations (Borenson and Associates) • Level 1 = sixth grade • Level 2 = seventh grade • Level 3 = eighth grade • “Mathematics Spoken Here” • School inclusion and co-teaching • School-wide calculators TI-73 (middle school graphing calculator)

  6. INITIATIVES • Added Everyday Math in 6th grade • Increased usage of math manipulatives • Extended day opportunities • Small group tutorials during activity periods • Block scheduling • Increased time of instruction from 36 minutes per day to 74 minutes per day • I CAN LEARN

  7. I CAN LEARN Libraries • Fundamentals of Math (122 lessons) • Pre-Algebra (119 lessons) • Algebra (180 lessons) • Geometry (20 lessons)

  9. I CAN LEARN Classroom Set-up • There are 30 computer stations with 1 teacher computer. All student stations are equipped with a headset. I CAN LEARN is the only program loaded on the computers. Students do not have access to any hardware except the mouse.

I CAN LEARN Program Flexibility • Teacher has control of the program • Change lesson order • Change difficulty of tests • Teacher can place individual student or entire class on a specific lesson • Ability to set up grade system to fit the teacher’s requirements • Ability to generate a variety of reports • Program has a section for attendance and disciplinary records

  15. I CAN LEARN Our Procedures • Calculators are provided at all student stations • ICL textbooks are available for student reference • Requirement of 3 to 4 lessons per week • Students receive a sticker for successful completion of a lesson

I CAN LEARN Advantages • Students entering their second year of ICL will pick up where they stopped the previous year • Completion of Pre-Algebra library leads into the Algebra • Time on task is greater • Allows for individual and/or small group instruction • Students work at their own pace • Noise level is much less
