Procedures
3. Observations Qualified NDE systems work when executed fully
Use the right probes and prepare the surface
Ensure that the contact surface is adequate everywhere
Document all areas of poor surface condition and all areas of scan limitation, and don’t take coverage credit there
Follow all the steps of data analysis before reaching a conclusion
4. But things may be different when applied… Experience has demonstrated that qualification of procedures alone may not guarantee a successful ISI campaign
Planning and Examination Preparation
Environmental Factors
Decision Making
Poor examination brings into question the qualification process !
5. What can be done… EPRI is preparing a guideline for the use of utilities in preparing for and executing, ultrasonic examinations
Prompted by field implementation issues
Addresses the key underlying factors
Human factors
Utility and vendor planning for the outage
6. Overview - Guideline for Conducting Ultrasonic Examinations of Dissimilar Metal Welds Introduction and Scope
Document Contents
Section 2 - Human Factors
Section 3 - Role of Utility
Section 4 – Role of Vendor
Section 5 – Collaboration Vendor/Utility
Section 6 – Conclusions/NEI 03-08 recommendations
The guidance will include one item categorized as “Needed” according to NEI 03-08. This item will require each utility to have a process for managing the measurement and improvement of weld surface conditions for dissimilar metal welds
7. Examples taken from the guidelines… Much of the report will focus on items defined by NEI-03-08 as good practices
Utility to establish that a qualified procedure is available, and prepare for any site-specific alternative qualifications that are needed
Utility personnel should have a thorough understanding of the examination procedures.
Utility to ensure that vendor has available all the proper, qualified equipment for the examination scope, and scope expansions.
8. Looking forward what can we do… Following Qualification, what can the Qualification Body do to improve in-service inspection?
