  1. BTEC First in BusinessWelcome and Introduction!Mr Brittain 2007 - 2009

  2. Welcome! • Business – Exactly what is says on the tin. Next 2 (150hrs) years we will study business! • Want as many examples, application and reference to business as possible • Look out, watch the TV, bbc.co.uk, listen to radio – anything to do with business you will be able to use in this course.

  3. Business Studies • Its your new start! • I don’t know you, you don’t know me! • Chance to make a clean start. Anything previous is all forgotten! • Fun but challenging subject • Need to set expectations

  4. A KEY SUBJECT • No matter what you do in life you will work for a business! • Business is the key GCSE employers look for after Maths, Science and English! • Business is the most popular degree in the UK • Basis for everything you need to know for your career after you leave school.

  5. Teacher-Student Expectations • Get the work done and achieve target grade. • Be quiet when asked – not deadly silent all of the time. • Participate and get involved. • Do not talk over me. • Have fun – but get the work done. • Hand in and complete all work set. • Respect • Trust

  6. Expectations • Important to clarify what YOU expect of me and what I expect of you. • Write down everything that you believe I should do for you.

  7. Student – Teacher Expectations

  8. Business Work Ethos • Don’t use boring materials • Every lesson is planned and developed to make it accessible and fun for you. • If you don’t like something – say! We may be able to change it – we are only Human! We work HARD! We have a LAUGH! We get RESULTS! We get the work DONE!

  9. The Business Way of Working Assignments: Split into sub-sections. Study 3 Units - each with 4 sub-sections Assignments have DEADLINES - these are non-negotiable and there is no such thing as handing nothing in! Deadlines are posted on the website under ‘Calendar’. Fail to meet deadline = Detention and phone call to parents

  10. The Support! • Website - www.teachmebusiness.co.uk • Blog - www.teachmebusiness.co.uk • Learning Drop In - Wednesday 3.15 - 5pm • In-class - work my way around everyone during a lesson, assignment sheets, formative assessment sheets. • Email - use for help/support outside of lessons

  11. BTEC First in Business • 100% Coursework – 3 units of portfolio work. • Therefore if you hand nothing in = you get nothing i.e. Grade U • We teach a few lessons of theory and then its up to you! Deadlines have to be met!

  12. Structure of Lessons • Non-traditional form of teaching - more practical and investigative (by you!) • Lessons are continual I.e. work towards completing checklist. • No games, myspace, blogs etc - only resources you need are directed on the website. • Its about your hard work and independent learning.

  13. Student Reps • One student from each group to meet with me once a half term to improve learning in Business • Fantastic way to get your point across to improve Business at Launceston.
