ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM & NETWORK ANALYSIS PRATK JOSHI
CONTENTS • Introduction • Properties of lubricant • Components used in lubrication system • Engine lubrication system • Flow network analysis • Oil pump flow analysis • Oil filter flow analysis • Hydraulic tappet analysis • Summary • References
INTRODUCTION • To supply the lubricating oil between the moving parts is termed as lubrication system • Lubrication of all the parts in engine is essential to avoid: • Friction • wear • To prevent the seizure
PROPERTIES OF LUBRICANTS • Viscosity • Density • Specific heat • Flash point • Adhesiveness • Chemical stability
COMPONENTS IN LUBRICATION SYSTEM • Oil sump or Oil tank • Oil pump • Oil filter and strainer • Oil pressure gauge • Oil level indicator
FLOW NETWORK THEORY • Flow rate & pressure drop through flow is calculated using two theories • Theory of mass conservation • The continuity of energy per unit mass
PIPE FLOW ANALYSIS • For incompressible flow, pressure drop through pipe is given by Fanning equation • Where K is dimensionless experimental coefficient accounting head loss in bends, elbows, T-joints etc.
OIL PUMP FLOW ANALYSIS • Gear pump with crescent guide between internal & external gear can be used as oil pump • Flow rate increases with increase in angular velocity
OIL FILTER ANALYSIS • Oil filter is used to filter out the dirt and grit particle from oil • Lubricating oil is passed through the filter before passing to bearings FIG: Oil filter
The pressure difference and flow rate can be calculated by formulae: • where , are constants and can be obtain by curve fitting (from matlab)
HYDRAULIC TAPPET FLOW ANALYSIS Fig: Hydraulic tappet
SUMMARY • Lubrication system • Properties of lubricant • Components in lubrication system • Engine flow lubrication system • Network flow analysis • Pipe flow analysis • Oil pump flow analysis • Oil filter flow analysis
