Responsibilities • Forensic engineers are responsible for discerning the cause(s) behind mechanical failures • Start by examining the pieces of what failed (a car’s brakes, for example) • Brainstorm for causes of the failure, based on the broken part(s) and the speculated series of events • Compare all data and ideas with the specifications and manufacturer information of the brakes • Perform sufficient experiments on identical sets of brakes and make conclusions based on the data • They are also responsible for reviewing the technical details of the opposition’s case
