Ice breaker With the person next to you discuss your opinions on the following: What do you think about web-based learning and its role in education? Be prepared to report back to the class
What are web-based learning systems? • Supported learning and teaching • Online- not in a classroom • Information is provided via this system
Web based learning systems… what’s the deal? • WBL provides engaging and interesting activities • It is a different way of presenting activities to children • WBL is a useful tool for teacher to provide a diverse learning environment. • Provides an independent style of learning and may assist with behaviour management.
The pros and cons • PROS • People who live in remote areas have access to a diverse range of learning and education • People who need to work full time while they study or have disabilities. • CONS • People are isolated from others, they may not develop good social skills • Computers cannot provide emotional , physical and psychological support that teachers can.
ACTIVITY 1:scenarios teaching vs web based learning • Explore the K12 International Academy website. http://www.k12.com/int/ Use this site to help you think about the positive and negative impacts of web based learning on the child in the scenario you are given. Do you think a teachers support in the classroom or web based learning will benefit the child the most? Why?
Activity 2: Class debate Will a well developed web-based learning system replace the teacher? • In your groups, discuss the question and brainstorm 3 points either for or against (you will be assigned a stance on the question) the topic. Note: you need a introduction, 3 points and conclusion.
