Steps of Sci Method • Purpose • Hypothesis • Experiment • Results • Conclusion
Purpose • What is the problem to be solved? • The purpose of this experiment is to determine the best way to remove ink from human skin.
Hypothesis • The predicted solution to the problem • Based on observations, research, or prior experience • If ink is hydrophobic, then more ink will be removed using ethanol (nonpolar solvent) than tap water (polar solvent).
Experiment • The hypothesis is tested in a controlled situation. • Experimental Group • One or more subjects used to test the hypothesis • Control Group • One or more subjects used to simulate normal conditions • Standard(s) for comparison
Experiment • Experimental Group • Ethanol • Control Group • Water
Experiment • Independent Variable • Factor that is manipulated by the experimenter • Polarity of solvent • Dependent Variable • Factor that changes as result of IV manipulation • Usually recorded as the data for the experiment • Degree of cleanliness
Experiment • Minimize variables • Minimal difference between control and experimental groups • __________________________ • __________________________ • __________________________ • __________________________ • Repeat
Results • Data tables, Graphs, Sketches • Visual representations are helpful • Just facts, no analysis Title Label (units) Label (units)
Conclusion • Hypothesis Discussion • Does the data support the hypothesis? • If the data refutes the hypothesis, was this due to an incorrect hypothesis or experimental error? The inkspots subjected to ethanol disappeared in fewer drops than those subjected to water. Therefore, the hypothesis was correct.
Conclusion • Error Discussion • What experimental errors may have significantly affected your data? • In what manner did they skew your data? The procedure was unclear about the concentration of ethanol to be used. A higher concentration would likely have decreased the number of drops necessary to dissolve the inkspot.
