Early Information Juan Ponce de Leon…… • Was born around 1460. • Born in Santervas de Campos near a Spanish town called Palencia. • Little is known about childhood and family. • It is said that family was very noble. Flag of Spain
Early Occupation • Served as page to King Ferdinand. • In teens went to military school. • Through the military, was able to accompany Christopher Columbus on his second voyage across the Atlantic. (1493-1496)
Exploration in the New World • 1502 Return to the New World to serve as military commander in conquered Caribbean areas. • 1508-1509 Lure of gold sent Ponce de Leon to current day Puerto Rico.
Major Achievement!! • 1503- In search of the fabled “Fountain of Youth” Ponce de Leon ended up being the first European to discover Florida and claim it for the Spanish! The route of exploration taken.
Why “Fountain of Youth” • As Ponce de Leon grew older he wanted to find the “Fountain of Youth.” • Sadly, the “Fountain of Youth” was never found, but Florida was claimed for the Spanish. Major voyage landed near St. Augustine.
Conflicts Faced • In places like Hispaniola conquered natives tried to revolt against military. • Bad ships with little food or water.
Last Voyage • Now famous for finding new land, Juan Ponce de Leon was sent by the King of Spain to colonize territory in Florida. • This was his last voyage.
End of Life • Died in 1512. • Cause of death was bad wounds from unfriendly natives in Florida. • Died in Cuba. Orange Blossom (Florida State Flower)
Interesting Facts! • Juan Ponce de Leon was governor a total of three times. • Through his life Juan Ponce de Leon went from sailing for military to sailing for gold, wealth, and personally sent by the King.
