ON RANKING UNIVERSITIES • Ranking of US universities started in the 1980’s • UK rankings appeared in the 1990’s • In 2003 ARWU ranking from China was initiated and rankings have now become prominent globally. • UP was ranked in the top 500 universities of the ARWU ranking from 2003-2008. • “Within only a few years, rankings have become an unavoidable part of academic life, for better or worse”. Ranking Forum of Swiss Universities, 2008.
UP FALLS OFF RANKING • The results of the 2008 Academic Ranking of Worldwide Universities (ARWU) did not include the University of Pretoria, first time since 2003 • Three South African universities remained in the rankings : Wits, UCT and UKZN • UP was one of 23 universities that fell off the list which included 2 African Universities, 2 UK, 9 USA, 1 Canada, 1 Italy, 2 Japan, 2 Australia, 1 Israel, 1 Netherlands • 16 Universities were added to the list for the first time: 5 China, 1 Netherlands, 2 UK, 2 USA, 3 Italy, 1 Germany, 1 Finland, 1 Brazil
