What is a cognitive tutor? • A cognitive tutor is an intelligent tutoring system which develops a cognitive model of a student as he or she interacts with the program, providing problems and individualized instruction based on this model.
Carnegie Mellon & Cognitive Tutors • Cognitive Tutor is also a name of a product produced by Carnegie Learning. • Carnegie Learning uses blended approach, with a textbook and software (called Cognitive Tutor) for each subject. • The Cognitive Tutors are based on the ACT-R theory of learning, memory and performance. The Tutors were developed using an empirical testing process. There are over 50 publications which now validate the effectiveness of cognitive modeling. • The curriculum is based on how students think and allows students to work at their own pace
Why Use Cognitive Tutors? • It allows for personalization of the learning process. • Has been successful in raising math test scores in both high school and middle school classrooms. • Always available to students • The software evaluates individual students math level step-by-step and presents the information tailored to the individual skill level of the students.
