He was born to parents who were former slaves; he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. Then scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population-and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. 5 FACTS ABOUT DR.CARTER G .WOODSON. • 1) He was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of the Association for the study of African American life and history. • 2) He was the author of the book, “The Miseducation of the Negro”, published in 1933. • 3) He promoted Negro History week on 1937, publishing the first issue of the Negro History Bulletin • 4) Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the “Father of African American History”, created several key organizations and founded Negro History week (precursor to African American history month. • 5) He created the Negro History Bulletin, developed for teachers in elementary and high school grades, and published continuously since 1937.
life lesson. • DR.CARTER G.WOODSON was know as the “Father of Black History,”. • He was the son of former slaves. • In 1912, Woodson became the second African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University (the first was W. E. B. Dubois). • Dr. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). • ASALH views the promotion of Black History Month as one of the most important components of advancing Dr. Woodson’s legacy.
lesson learned • I learned that even if you were a slave you had to work heard to get to school and to get a job. • Dr. Carter G. Woodson had to work hard to go to school and he became the father of African American history. • And you could learn a lot about him if you take the time to read about him.
