What are they like??? The falls form a crescent-shape about 2.5 miles long. There are some 275 individual cascades and water falls separated by rocky, densely wooded areas. Some of the cascades plummet straight down for 269 feet into the gorge below, this can also be called a plunge pool. Others are interrupted by ledges and send up clouds of mist and spray, creating a dazzling display of rainbows. Picture 1- Iguacu falls
Why are they like that??? • One hundred million years ago, eruptions of basaltic lava broke through chasms in the Earth's crust, forming spillways several kilometres high in layers several meters thick. • The Iguassu Falls are formed by three of these spillways. • Horizontal and vertical movement of the continental plates created vertical cracks in the basalt rock called faults. These run through the Iguassu region. • The main channel of the Iguassu River runs through one of the faults where erosion has been greater. People viewing Iguacu falls
