John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.

  3. Introduction This opening passage is one of the great summits of Scripture. It reaches the highest of human thought. It declares the great truth that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is... •  the Word of God •  the Creator of Life •  the Very Being and Essence of Life. These three truths have to be deeply thought about to understand their meaning.

  4. Jesus Is The Eternal Word of God! • John 1:1-2 • In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. • There are 3 important statements here. • The Word was preexistent. • The Word was coexistent. • The Word was God

  5. Jesus is the Creator John 1:3All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. Jesus was the One who created all things. Among the Godhead, He was the active Agent, the Person who made all things. Creation was His function and work!

  6. Jesus Is The Essence of Life! Christ is the Source of Life John 1:4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. As God, Jesus does not need anything to sustain Him. He is alive because He is the Great I AM. All that is alive in this creation is so as a result of Jesus’ creative work. He has life, and He breathed that life into His Creation.

  7. Jesus Is The Essence of Life! Christ is the Source of Light John 1:4In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. Christ is the source of light. Note the statement: "The life was the light of men." From the very beginning man was to know that life, to know God personally and intimately.

From the very beginning, the Jesus was to be the light of man's... •  quality of being •  essence of being •  power of being •  force of being •  energy of being •  principle of being Jesus is to be the light of man's purpose, meaning and significance upon earth.

  10. Jesus Is Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness John 1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. The word used for darkness describes both the state and the works of man. Darkness is very real in Scripture. 1.  The darkness refers to the world of the natural man who does not know Jesus Christ. The natural man walks in ignorance of the True God, Jesus, and of the real purpose and destiny of life as shown by Jesus Christ. John 8:12Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

  11. Jesus Is Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness John 1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 2.  The darkness symbolizes unpreparednesss. It symbolizes the time when evil occurs. 3.  The darkness is loved by men. Sinful men do their evil deeds under the cover of darkness. Men therefore hate the light because the light uncovers their evil behavior. 4.  The darkness is hostile to light

  12. Jesus Is Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness John 1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. Christ is the answer to darkness. Christ's light shone in the darkness. Very simply, since man had brought darkness into the world (by sin), the life of Christ was the light of man, the beam that showed man the way, the truth and the life.

  13. Jesus Is The Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness • John 1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. • Christ showed man the way God intended him to live. • Christ showed man the truth of life, that is, the truth about God and man and the truth about the world of man. • Christ showed man the life, that is, how to save his life and avoid the things that can cause him to stumble and lose his life.

  14. Jesus Is The Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness John 1:5And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. The world did not comprehend the Light of Christ. Though the world rejected the light, it could not overcome the light. We each need to ask ourselves the question, “Are we walking in light or darkness?” Your actions will reveal your condition!

  15. Jesus Is The Essence of Life! Christ is the Answer to Darkness John 17:3And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
