BY MISS P HUMES FOR 3A Number patterns in math
What is a Number Pattern? • A number pattern is a list of numbers that follow a certain rule. • Number patterns can be found everywhere. In a phone number, you can find a number pattern (222-333-4441). You can find number patterns in a person's address (1212 Home Street). • Look at this number pattern. • 321, 421, 521, 621... • The next number would be 721.
Attributes of Number Patterns • A pattern can be a growing or increasingpattern. • This means that the numbers in the pattern are getting larger. • Examples: 2, 4, 6, 8 Rule: add 2 3, 8, 13, 18 Rule: add 5 125, 135, 145 Rule: add 10 4, 8, 16, 32 Rule: double the number or multiply by 2
Attributes of Number Patterns • A pattern can be a shrinking or decreasingpattern. • This means that the numbers in the pattern are getting smaller • Examples: 750, 650, 550, 450 Rule: subtract 100 35, 30, 25, 20 Rule: subtract 5 200, 40, 8 Rule: divide 5
Attributes of Number Patterns • A pattern can be a repeatingpattern. • This means that the numbers in the pattern repeat over and over again. • Examples: 10, 18, 10, 18, Rule: 10, 18 then it repeats 3, 6, 3, 2, 3, 6, 3, 2 Rule: 3, 6, 3, 2, then it repeats
Attributes of Number Patterns • Look at the following number patterns. Can you tell if it is an increasing/shrinking pattern, a decreasing/growing pattern or a repeating pattern... • 20, 29, 38, 20, 29, 38 • 11, 17, 23, 29, 35 • 51, 46, 41, 36, 31 • 23, 25, 27, 29 • 21, 18, 15, 12 repeating, Rule: 20, 29, 38, 20 then it repeats increasing, Rule: add 6 decreasing, Rule: subtract 5 Increasing. Rule: add 2 Decreasing, Rule: subtract 3
TYPES OF NUMBER PATTERNS • There are many different types of number patterns but we will learn about 2; • Arithmetic Sequence • Geometric Sequence
Arithmetic Sequence • A sequence is group of numbers that follow a pattern based on a specific rule. • An arithmetic sequence involves a sequence of numbers to which the same amount has been added or subtracted. • The amount that is added or subtracted is known as the commondifference. • For example, in the sequence "1, 4, 7, 10, 13..." each number has been added to 3 in order to get the next number. The common difference for this sequence is 3.
Arithmetic Sequence • Here are some examples of arithmetic sequences. • 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, • 76, 70, 64, 58, 52, 46 • 17, 22, 27, 32, 37, 42 • 16, 20, 24, 28, 32, 36 • 95, 87, 79, 71, 63, 55 • 81, 75, 69, 63, 57, 51 Rule: Add 2 Rule: Subtract 6 Rule: Add 5 Rule: Add 4 Rule: Subtract 8 Rule: Subtract 6
Geometric Sequence • A geometric sequence is a list of numbers that are multiplied or divided by the same amount. • The amount by which the numbers are multiplied is known as the commonratio. • For example, in the sequence "2, 4, 8, 16, 32..." each number is multiplied by 2. The number 2 is the common ratio for this geometric sequence.
Geometric Sequence • Here are some examples of geometric sequences. • 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 • 2, 6, 18, 54 • 81, 27, 9, 3, 1 • 512, 256, 128, 64 Rule: Multiply by 2 Rule: Multiply by 3 Rule: Divide by 3 Rule: Divide by 2
Discovering Number Patterns • When trying to find the rule of a number pattern, try the following steps. • Example: 106, 100, 94, ___, 82, ___ • Step 1: Decide whether or not it is an increasing or decreasing pattern. • Step 2: Find the difference between the first two numbers by subtracting the smaller number from the bigger number This is a decreasing pattern because the numbers are getting smaller. 106 - 100 6
Discovering Number Patterns • Step 3: Repeat step 2 for the next given terms and see if you notice a pattern. • Step ;4: Once you have discovered the difference, fill in the missing terms and state the rule 10o - 94 6 106, 94, 88, 82, 76Rule: Subtract 6
NUMBER PATTERNS CHALLENGE • You will be shown a series of number patterns. • In your groups, see if you can find the rule. • For each one you get right, you will earn 2 points to be added to your group points. • Are you ready? • Let`s Go!!!
NUMBER PATTERNS CHALLENGE • 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 • 49, 47, 45, 43, 41 • 101, 93, 85, 77, 69 • 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 • 98, 87, 76, 65, 54 • 15, 115, 215, 315 • 3, 4, 3, 2, 3, 4, 3, 2 RULE: Subtract 3 RULE: Subtract 2 RULE: Subtract 8 RULE: Add 3 RULE: Subtract 11 RULE: Add 100 RULE: 3, 4, 3, 2 then it repeats
