Facebook, advertising and its impact on YOU! How Social networks infiltrate the wallets and habits of its users.
Social Networks and Advertising • In 2010 it is expected that Facebook will bring in $1 Billion in revenue. This revenue comes from advertisers looking to display their products on Facebook. • Overall $2.2 Billion will be spent by companies trying to advertise on social networks such as MySpace, Twitter and Facebook Source: “Social Advertising: Trends For 2010”
Lots of Money Spent.. Why? • Advertisers are spending close to a billion dollars to appeal to users of social network websites, why? • Have you ever bought a product that you saw on an ad for on Facebook, MySpace or Twitter? • Think about the people using these social media websites, who are they? • Why do advertisers want to target these specific individuals?
People on Facebook • More than 400 million active users • 50% of active users log on to Facebook in any given day • Average user has 130 friends • People spend over 500 billion minutes per month on Facebook • What this translates to is a lot of people being on social networks for a lot of time throughout the day.
Advertising Principles • Advertisers want to get their product out to as many people as possible. More importantly they want to get that product noticed by people who will BUY their product. Which product would be a better fit for Facebook?
Emerging Forms of Advertising • Five years ago advertising on the internet was not a successful way to market products. Today ads are everywhere. • If you want to watch a music video what do you have to sit through first?
Youtube and Advertising • Companies like VEVO (music videos) and HULU (TV clips) are using commercials before and after their clips to advertise their services. • Additionally ads constantly run in the bottom of most videos (which can be removed by the user) • http://www.youtube.com/user/huludotcom?blend=2&ob=4#p/a/8C1D2E8BB4536781/0/HnyEiXFyK10 • This constant bombardment of advertising has serious repercussions for us as a society.
Impact of Advertising on Social Networks • What are some possible negative implications associated with the bombardment of advertising during our supposed “down time”? • Consider the motives of advertisers and companies ($$$) do you feel taken advantage of?
