Engineering for the Future Section 16 MaviJiko Abstract The design project revolves around making a clean, safe and relatively cheap cooking utensil for people off the electrical grid in third world countries, primarily Africa. This cooker needs to be both efficient and safe for users, as well as have a common fuel source. We as a team came up with numerous concepts which were innovative. Among these concepts we chose the one which had some useful yet cost effective feature.. We also made it very clean and more efficient by using the super heating properties of water and oil mixed together. The cooker that the team designed is not only innovative but also very effective at serving its purpose. “ The Community Cooker” Features -Oven - 6 Stove Tops - Kiln -2 Large Stove Tops -Water Distiller •Feeds up to 15 families at once Production Cost • Weighted Hierarchal Customer Needs List • Safe (0.41, 0.41) • 1.1 Safe to Operate (0.27, 0.67) • 1.2 No pollution (0.14, 0.33) • Effective (0.23, 0.23) • 2.1 Cooks Fast and Clean (0.06, 0.25) • 2.2 Multiple Functions (0.03, 0.13) • 2.3 Maintain a High Temperature (0.14, 0.61) • Easy to Operate (0.18, 0.18) • 3.1Simple Mechanics (0.10, 0.54) • 3.2 Easy to Repair (0.07, 0.36) • Cost (0.06, 0.06) • Durability (0.12, 0.12) • 5.1 Sturdy materials used (0.08, 0.67) Trash or Fuel? In Kenya and other African countries, there is no waste management. Garbage trucks do not come every week. Piles of trash fill both the streets and outskirts of cities and villages. The Jiko is the solution to not only an effective cooker, but also to the trash problem effecting these people. Burning Trash Using combustion methods using water and sump oil, we as a team have designed a firebox that can burn up 600˚C. By vaporizing droplets of water to split off the oxygen and mixing it with the burning oil, we have pushed up the temperature to destroy all the toxins in the smoke At this temperature, the carcinogens and other harmful pollutants in trash are vaporized and are no longer harmful fumes. There are also filters in the chimney for extra filtration. Beyond Beneficial •Cooks for the community • Helps solve waste management problems. Cleans Streets • Creates Job opportunities for people to run the cooker • Make pottery and small bricks in kiln • Creates Clean drinking water EMS Modeling Signal Engage external Energy Energy Accept External Energy Convert External Energy to Heat Oil and Water drip onto Combustion causes heat to increase hot steel plate.
