Brief: • Lighten the burden of water collection for women in the developing world.
Problem • Water supplies are far away • Girls miss school to retrieve water in the mornings • The water is often dirty and full of disease • Causing illness and death, as well as problems from carrying the heavy water.
Facts • More than 3.4 million people die each year from water, sanitation, and hygiene-related causes. Nearly all deaths, 99 percent, occur in the developing world. • Lack of access to clean water and sanitation kills children at a rate equivalent of a jumbo jet crashing every four hours. • 780 million people lack access to an improved water source; approximately one in nine people. • "[The water and sanitation] crisis claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns." • Over 2.5X more people lack water than live in the United States.

Health Aspects The quality of the water depends a lot on the source of water (see table below). Its contents are not always of drinking water quality. Even if water is safe at the point of source, there is a high risk of contamination during transport. To prevent waterborne diseases from unverified sources, safe storage and treatment of the water at the point of use and adapted hygienic conditions are very important. Revised brief • Design a low cost, affordable, solution to assist in transporting water to homes in the water deprived Sub-Saharan desert. Encouraging children age 8-16 (mostly girls) to attend school, instead of missing it due to water collection. The solution must be capable of on distilling the water so it is clean and safe to drink.
