The challenger space shuttle disaster A space shuttle was a new form of a rocket that was shaped like a jet plane. The shuttle had several boosters containing highly flammable fuel. The role of the boosters was to take the shuttle into orbit then realise the shuttle so it could by itself. The astronauts would then conduct experiments in space. They could then fly the shuttle back to earth. The shuttle could then be used for other flights. This is what made the shuttle very useful because it could carry more astronauts than a rocket and also be used again whereas a rocket could only be used once. Some of the experiments they did in space were to study stars, seek to understand how microgravity changes the way potential dangerous bacteria grow, especially how they form difficult-to-kill colonies called biofilms. They launched satellites and conducted space walks. The shuttle was due to launch on the 23rd of January but because to the cold weather and repairing of the shuttle they launched the challenger shuttle on the 28th, 11:38 (EST) and the temperature was still -1 degree. The reason why the challenger exploded was because of the very cold weather (some of engineers didn’t want to launch the shuttle.) The weather made the O-rings inside the boosters freeze over. The O rings were meant to stop the fuel from leaking as the booster came loose. When they were 73 seconds up in the air some of the highly flammable fuel came out causing the booster and the shuttle to explode. All 7 people died!
Imaging if you were the family of the one of the astronauts watch the booster and shuttle go up and suddenly it just explodes!!!!! One of the astronauts was a teacher and her student saw explode
