  1. Rome’s contributions to the Western World The Romans were more than just names in a history book. Their inventions in various areas are still used today. Go through the textbook (using the page numbers provided) and give 1-2 ways Rome contributed to the Western world. Area (pg #) Contributions Agriculture (244-5) Grew wheat for bread, olives and grapes; developed an improved plough and invented the quern Industry (245-6) Workshops (that employed crafts people), clubs for people with certain trades and skills Trade (246-7) Port at Ostia used for trade across the Mediterranean Literature (247-50) Works of Catullus, Cicero, Virgil and Livy Architecture (250-1) Temples consisting of a cella; use of the arch, concrete; buildings built to commemorate emperors Painting & Sculpture (251-2) Sculptures that focused on the head and shoulders; popularized the mosaic Engineering (253-4) Built roads to well, many are still used today; included foundations, ditches Aqueducts (254-5) Constructed to bring water to the cities, gradually downhill; also developed wells Examined new methods of treating illness (use of surgical instruments); knew how do surgery, dissected apes to learn about anatomy Medicine (255) Math (255) Roman numerals Time (255-6) Development of Julian calendar (similar to what we use today)
