A Radioactive Beam EXperiment at ISOLDE for Coulomb excitation and neutron transfer reactions of exotic nuclei. • The physics with energetic nuclear beams represents one of the most exciting frontiers in nuclear physics. Radioactive Nuclear Beams (RNB) is a novel tool giving access to nuclei far off stability. Until now, the technical developments needed have been too challenging, but with REX-ISOLDE a first generation of post-accelerated radioactive beams will be produced. • The aim with the REX-ISOLDE pilot experiment is todemonstrate an efficient way to bunch, charge-breed and post-accelerate on-line mass separated 1+ radioactive ions.In a first stage neutron rich Na and K isotopes in the region around the neutron shell closure N=20 and N=28 will be studied after Coulomb excitation and neutron transfer. • The REX-ISOLDE facilitywill offer a wide variety of ions, presently 600 radio-active beams are available, and a full mapping out of the proton instability limit up to at least Z~50. • The project is a collaboration between several universities and institutes, mainly from Europe. • The initial experiments are planned to take place in 1999. 104/s (ISOLDE) intruder ground states deformed states
