A Synthesis of Research on Requirements Analysis and Knowledge Acquisition Techniques Terry Anthony Byrd Kathy L. Cossick Robert W. Zmud MIS Quarterly – March 1992 SeyedrezaMousavi – Fall 2011 CIS 791
Categorization Scheme for RA and KA • Communications Obstacles • Within obstacles • Techniques should enhance recall or understanding of end users and experts • Between obstacles • Techniques should aid participants’ communications • Among obstacles • Techniques should balance the needs of multiple users
Categorization Scheme for RA and KA • The facilities for problem domain understanding • Information requirements • Process understanding • Behavior understanding • Problem frame understanding • A technique’s Locus of control • System analyst/ KE • End user/ Expert • Machine
Strengths • Triggered an insightful argument • Proposed superior research extensions • Gave a holistic overview about RA and KA techniques • Provided the opportunity for comparing different techniques in RA and KA
Weaknesses • It is not a rigorous research (three dimensions and elicitation mode categorization) • Superficial explanations • Disregarded the differences among different techniques • It is hard to understand table 3
Extensions and Future Research • Make it more rigorous by comparing common RA and KA techniques in table 3 by various examples. • To discover similarities • To discover differences • Apply two of the most common used methods in a RA or KA research using experiment strategy • Put origin of each technique in table three • Plus research extensions proposed by the authors
