Pixels, placements and possibilities an historical view of the pixel telescope layout André David (CERN/CFIF-IST) – NA60 Coll. Meeting – April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
The Proposal Setup • 6 small 4-chip planes • 4 big planes with 8 di-chip assemblies André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Objectives for this work • Define chips’ positions inside the 8-chip (big) planes • Maximize geometrical coverage of muon for expected placement positions (20-36 cm) • Distribute the planes inside the telescope • Maximize physics performance, while • Guaranteeing technically feasibility André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Chronology • March 2002 • 8-chip plane design • April – November 2002 • Telescope layout optimization from physics • December 2002 – April 2003 • Layout constraining from technical issues André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
The 8-chip plane design • Exploit offline cuts on muons passing • ACM Fe poles • Trigger inneficiency from “keyhole” on R3 • Inner hole adjusted to not lose muons at 26 cm • Done for both J/ and decay muons André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
First setups • 6 small planes starting at 7.6 cm every 1.2 cm • x y x’ x y’ x’ • 4 big planes at 16, 26, 30 and 36 cm André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
First setups - continued • Put 2 back-to-back small planes at 16 cm • Add y plane • Put small “hole-filler” plane in front of 1st big plane André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Interlude – Summer 2002 • The modules holding the chips started to shape up in June 2002 • This gave more information to constrain the placement of the planes in the telescope André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups - Introduction • Last November there was a clear idea of the minimal distances we could have between planes • (ppix, A Anneau) André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Performance criteria • Measured as percentage of “uncut” single muons • ACM iron poles, R3 keyhole and MWPC fiducial zone • Muons for “offsetting” require • 2x+1y hits on first 6 small planes, plus • 2X hits on big planes • Muons for “tracking” require • 2x+1y hits on first 9 small planes, plus • 2X hits on big planes • Only use J/ decay muons • Retracking each configuration takes ~2 hours 2x + 1y 2X 2x + 1y 2X André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Set1 • Several assumptions used • Cut PCB components’ pins • Use LEMO for GLink connector • Back-to-back planes can really be put back-to-back • Offsetting – 81.6% • Tracking – 87.5% • Loss of muons in first and last small planes André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Set2 • Moved small planes further downstream • Gain ~2.5% • Offsetting – 84.2% • Tracking – 88.3% André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Set3 • Put big planes further upstream • 22, 28 and 32 cm • Gain ~4% • Offsetting – 88.4% • Tracking – 92.9% André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Set4 • Put 2nd big plane in the middle of the other 2 • 21, 26.5, 32 cm • Gain ~1.5% • Offsetting – 89.7% • Tracking – 94.2% André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups – Set5 & 6 • Put hole filler in the middle of the first 2 big planes • Correct material thicknesses • No gain, but no loss • Offsetting – 89.7% • Tracking – 94.2% André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
Final Setups - SPSC setup • Based on the last configuration • Removed some pixel planes • Replaced by strip planes • On CVS André David – Pixels, placement and possibilities, NA60 Coll. Meeting, April 14-15, 2003 - CERN
