MIG WELDING SAFETY - MIG STANDS FOR "METAL INERT GAS". - MIG WELDING USES AN ELECTRICAL ARC TO MELT THE BASE METAL AND FILLER WIRE. - ELECTRICAL SHOCK CAN KILL. ONLY WELD IN DRY AREAS, MAKING SURE TO USE INSULATING LEATHER GLOVES. - SHUT DOWN AND UNPLUG THE WELDER IF CHANGING A CONTACT TIP, REFEEDING THE WIRE OR CHANGING A SPOOL.
MIG SAFETY CONTINUED - CHECK WORK AREA FOR POTENTIAL FLAMMABLES OR EXPLOSIVES. - FUMES CREATED BY WELDING CAN BE TOXIC. ENSURE THAT YOUR WORK AREA IS VENTILATED. - ULTRAVIOLET (VISIBLE) AND INFRARED (INVISIBLE) RAYS ARE PRODUCED BY THE WELDING PROCESS. THESE RAYS WILL BURN EYES AND SKIN. WELDING HELMETS, LONG SLEEVES, LEATHER APRON AND LEATHER WELDING GLOVES MUST BE WORN.
MIG SAFETY CONTINUED - NEVER WELD ON A CLOSED CONTAINER. - ALTHOUGH THE GAS USED WITH THE MIG WELDING PROCESS IS NOT FLAMMABLE, FOLLOW THE SAME PRECAUTIONS AS WITH THE OXY-ACETYLENE TORCH - TANK MUST BE CHAINED AND SECURE - TANK MUST BE CLOSED WHEN FINISHED - TANK MUST BE CAPPED WHEN NOT ON THE WELDER - EMF (ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELDS) MAY POSE A HEALTH HAZARD WITH PROLONGED EXPOSURE. MAY INTERFERE WITH PACEMAKERS OR OTHER MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
