PRINCE2 & ITSM [a discussion with an IT project manager]
Part 1/3: It’s a framework • PRINCE2: Projects IN Controlled Environments • Seven Principles • Seven Themes • Seven Processes • Activities • Recommended Actions
Fencing skills • “Why are we having this conversation today - what’s your interest in hearing a PM yarn on about a framework?”
A student monk is one side of a fence, his master on the other Student: “How do I get to the other side of the fence?” Master: “You are already on the other side”
Catching the Baby • “Which of those Principles, Themes and Processes do you think might be most important to you in a ‘catcher’ role? • Pick perhaps three of each”
Part 2/3: sign for delivery • 3 key Principles for discussion • Learn from Experience • Defined R&R • Product Focus • 3 key Themes for discussion • Organisation • Quality • Change • 3 key Processes for discussion • Managing a Stage Boundary • Controlling a Stage • Closing a Project
Exercise 2: top 10 • Pick a partner not the same highlighter colour as you, and not the same organisation but in a similar role • Make a quick list of non-delivery ‘gripes’ - in order of angst! • Work with the Presenter to pull this into a Top 10 • Make sure your points are heard and represented
It’s a plot! • “No, I’m not trying to get ITSMs to take all responsibility from the IT PM for delivery of Quality into Production” • “In fact, given what you’ve seen so far, what do you think the PMs should be doing more of?”
Part3/3: it was a plot! • “Hopefully you’ll have said earlier that pieces of work do land in your laps, in a variety of ways and covering a wide cost/risk/size spectrum” • “Either the work can be offloaded to IT Project Management, or it’s managed in-house”
Prince2 ‘lite’ • 3 key Principles for Delivery • Continued Business Justification • Manage by Exception • Tailor to Suit the Project Environment • 3 key Themes for Delivery • Business Case • Plans • Risk • Processes for Delivery “The whole framework is required. How does it work in an ITIL world – can you pick some parts only?”
Exercise 3: case study • Form a team from amongst the audience • Executive, Board, PM • Business Sponsor, Snr Supplier, Snr User • Other roles? • Ask the room for a classic ITSM project deliverable • Loudest one wins • Team, describe what you’d expect for each of your areas • Consistency: the ‘chicken soup’ approach • Comprehensively: cover all bases • Concisely: Focus on the product, not activity
thanks • Here are a couple of papers that seemed to have the most value given the NZ context of SM’s wearing several hats: • “PRINCE2 for Small-scale Projects” Chris Ferguson • “Case Study: Using ITIL & PRINCE2 Together” Noel Scott
