  7. Became the champion of the “forgotten man” • Spoke out against the evils of federal intervention in local affairs

  8. Reagan wins with 51% of popular vote but 489 to 49 in electoral votes • Republicans gain control of Senate for 1st time in 25 years • Inauguration sweetened by release of hostages

  13. 12 days later, 69 year old Reagan walked out of hospital & received huge public sympathy • Hinckley found not guilty by reason of insanity

  14. Reaganomics • “Supply-side economics” • Reagan cut taxes on the “trickle down” idea that if people had more $$$$, they would invest instead of spend on consumer goods

  15. Reagan Tax Cut • 1981: Congress granted his 25% across-the-board reduction in taxes over 3 years

  16. Reagan Budget • Gets Congress to agree to $695 billion budget that increased defense spending, made cuts in domestic programs, & created a $38 billion deficit

  17. Reagan Recession (1982) • Unemployment hits 11% • Businesses & banks folded • Auto industry hit hardest • Democrats charge Reagan cuts hurt poorest Americans hardest

  18. “Tight money” policy under Carter really the cause • 1983: Economy turns around & “Reaganomics” vindicated • 1980s saw 1st increases in gaps between rich & poor

  19. YUPPIES • Young Urban Professionals • Symbolic of increasing wealth of upper classes & pursuit of wealth of 1980s culture • Rolex watches & BMWs

  20. Defense Spending • Many argue that the real growth in GNP of the 1980s resulted by the nearly $2 trillion of defense spending • Caused budget deficits of nearly $200 billion a year in the 1980s

  21. Rising Interest Rates • Government borrowing kept interest rates high • Elevated the value of the US dollar • Helped some but hurt American exporters • Trade deficit reached record high in 1987

  22. S & L Bailout • 1982: Reagan pushes deregulation of savings & loan industry • Allowed riskier loans • Loans not repaid leaving heavy debts • 1989: Gov’t forced to bail them out ($500 billion)
