Introduction • Thecurrentresearchwascompletedwithinthe Baltic Sea Region Programme 2007-2013 project Baltic BiogasBus. Withregardstotheproject, Tartu City Governmenthasagreedtobuy (bio)gas-fuelledbusses and tobuildtheneededinfrastructure. • Sofarthefollowingstudieshavebeenconducted: • 1) Feasibilitystudyof CNG bussestobeusedinpublic transport • 2) Studyabouttheproductionoflandfillgassesof Aardlapalu landfill • 3) Studyabouttheselectionoflocationsfor CNG fuellingstations • 4) Feasibilitystudyof a (bio)gasfuellingstation • 5) Feasibilitystudyofthedepotforbiogasbusses • Thecurrentstudyabouttheprocurementoptionsof CNG bussesalsosupportsthecauseoftheproject. www.balticbiogasbus.eu
Introduction • Theusageof CNG asfuelforvehicles • Naturalgas: themixtureofmethane+ ethane, propane, buthane, fractionsofhigherhydrocarbons and inertgases • Lesspollutingcomponentsderivingfromcombustion • Thepreferenceofnaturalgasoverliquidfuelprolongstheworkinglifeofengines. • CNG canalsocompriseofbiogas, whichhasbeenproducedbyanaerobicdecompositioninlandfills, biogasgenerators and watertreatmentplants, and whichcanbefurtherpurifiedtoobtainbiomethane. www.balticbiogasbus.eu
Introduction • Theusageof CNG asfuelforvehicles • Embodimentsof CNG engines: • bifuelledengine, whichiscapableofusingbothnaturalgas and benzine • two-systemengine, inwhichtheengineworksonly on dieselorthecombinationofdiesel and naturalgas. Thediesel part isusedfortheignitionofnaturalgas. • singlesystemengine, workingonly on naturalgas (preferredbythebusproducers) • 25 percentless CO2 productioncomparedtopetrolfuelledcars, 20 percentlesscomparedtodieselcars • enginenoiselevel 2 timeslower. www.balticbiogasbus.eu
Purposeofthestudy • To analyse and compare CNG busses and their procurement conditions meant for serving in the public transport, having sent inquiries to different bus producers/suppliers www.balticbiogasbus.eu
Methods * Toestablishthebestprocurementchoice, tablecomparisonhasbeenused, inwheretheprocurementconditions (totalprice, deliverytime, guarantee, passengercapacity) havebeenindicatedas “+” (favourable) and “-” (unfavourable). Evaluationisbased on thearithmeticmeanoftheprocurementconditions, whichhasbeenfoundbyusingthetablecalculationprogramof MS Excel 2007. On thebasisofthearithmeticmean, thedeliveryconditionsofthe 5 suppliershavebeendividedintocriteriaofpros and cons (“+” and “-”). www.balticbiogasbus.eu

Summary and recommendations Feasible options of procurements 12m CNG busses – Mercedes-Benz Citaro CNG and TEDOM C12G. 18m CNG busses – Mercedes-Benz Citaro CNG. Recommendations: *Find more info about technical properties of the busses, especially regarding the concrete solutions and Tartu city features. *More research needed about specific delivery and payment conditions. *Start negotiations with the most suitable supplier in order to sign contracts. *After the project´s preparatory phase, start the pilot project. www.balticbiogasbus.eu
