What are the major parts of a plant? • FLOWERS produce seeds andSEEDS produce new plants. • Reproduction! • LEAVES absorb sunlight and produce the plant's food. • Photosynthesis! • TRUNK OR STEM supports the plant and transports the fluids throughout the plant. • Transpiration! • ROOTS bring water and nutrients into the plant. They also anchor the plant.

  5. Water • How much water do plants need to live? • What happens if we never water plants? • What happens if we water plants every day? • What kind of water can we use?

Nutrients • What kind of nutrients do plants need? • Potassium (K): used in photosynthesis • Nitrogen (N): used to make enzymes and cells • Phosphorus (P): Helps make DNA • Where do the nutrients come from? • What happens if the plant uses up all the nutrients? • What nutrient is the most important?

  7. Light • Why do plant need light? • What happens when plants don’t have light? • How much light do they need? • In the winter the day is short - but some plants still grow! • What kind of light? • Does a light bulb work? • Will red light or blue light work? What about a black light?

  8. Soil • Do plants need soil to grow? Why? • Can plants grow without soil? • Hydroponics! • Can plants grow in sand? • Can plants grow on rocks?
