The Four Tank System Intern: Theora Rice Mentor: Dr. Craig Rieger • The Reality • Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are spread throughout the United States, controlling electric and gas power, sewage and water treatment, food production, and many other essential processes necessary for daily life. • Many of these systems are run on old software and hardware, making upgrading a difficult task. • The process of creating resilient control systems is hard because they must maintain state awareness and an accepted level of operational normalcy in response to any disturbance, accidental or maliciously intended. • The Risks • Unexpected Faults – Abnormal behavior can cause mechanisms to act outside their bounds and threaten the stability of the ICS • Complexity – ICSs are being integrated into IT systems, leading to tangled dependencies. • Human performance – The Operator must have knowledge of all possible threats to the system. • Cyber Security – ICS are attractive targets for malicious attackers. However, defensive measures can be almost as disruptive as an attack. • Lack of State Awareness – A multitude of conditions must be analyzed before making a judgment about the stability of the ICS. The Research System A Diagram of the Four Tank System • The Setup • At the bottom of every tank resides an electric level sensor • Manual and automatic controls are placed to control tank flow • Tank 4 is connected to Tank1, as Tank 2 is to Tank 3 • Water drains from Tank 1 to 2, and from Tank 3 to 4. • The PLC acts as an interface between the HMI and valves • The Process • The operator sets a level for Tanks 2 and 4, and sets the Flow Control Valves to a position between 0 and 100 • The pump and control valves circulate water into the system. The pump and control valve on the left are hooked to Tanks 2 and 3, as those on the right are to Tanks `4 and 1. • Water will drain from tanks 2 and 4 into the water container below. • Once the level has been met for Tanks 2 and 4, the tank control valves will begin filling Tanks 1 and 3. These will then train into the tanks below them. • The Challenge • University Teams will build their own four tank system, or remotely access the pictured system, and experiment on how to best create a resilient control system. • They will be invited to present their successful findings at the International Symposium on Resilient Control Systems (ISRCS)
