CHEMICAL WEATHERING CAVE FORMATION
With underground rivers and spectacular formations, Jenolan cave in Sydney is among the finest and oldest cave systems in the world.
The Chillagoe caves in North Queensland contain marvellous mud and coral reefs and impressive limestone towers up to 70m tall. The limestone has been weathered, dissolved and reformed by water to create spectacular caverns and passages, decorated by stalactites, stalagmites and flowstones.
How are caves formed? • Carbon dioxide + water = carbonic acid • Carbonic acid + limestone = caves
Stalactites Stalactite is a type of mineral that hangs from the ceiling or wall of limestone cave. It is sometimes referred to as dripstone.
Stalagmites • Stalagmite is a type of mineral that rises from the floor of a limestone cave due to the dripping of mineralized solutions and the deposition of calcium carbonate
