Poster Session HRT1306 – Best Practice Health Service Cleaning 18th and 19th April 2013 Sydney Implementation of environmental cleaning standards in BMT/Haematology units in NSW : A Network approach Presenter(s): Dr Nicole Gilroy/Mr Graeme Still Hospital Code Name:
THE CLINICAL CONTEXT 14 BMT Units in NSW -a clinical network (BMT Network NSW, Agency for Clinical Innovation) Malignant haematology (eg Acute leukaemia, myeloma) main indications for BMT. Hospital acquired infections (HAIs) /outbreaks common VRE, C. difficile, Multiresistant gram negative infections (MRPA, MRAB, ESBLs), Respiratory viruses Many HAIs are sustained by environmental reservoirs
AIMS : To implement the updated NSW environmental cleaning policy and procedures across BMT units “ an extreme risk” functional area To standardise internal and external auditing methods across BMT Units To attain compliance with audit standards across the BMT Network through A pilot of education/training modules (targeting BMT) Accreditation of personnel servicing “extreme risk” functional areas
BASELINE DATA Planned surveys across BMT centres Environmental services Unit managers Hospital executive *Baseline data to inform development of education/training modules for cleaners *Baseline data to assess workforce differences *Baseline data to identify differences in clinical governance that impact delivery of cleaning services in BMT and capacity to respond to problems
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES (1) Internal auditing of BMT Units E-based audit tool Monthly implementation Reporting by centre, and in aggregate Auditors trained, independent Assess: outcomes of cleaning External auditing of BMT Units Yearly Auditors trained and independent of institution Assess: outcomes of cleaning and other quality measures (process issues: incident reporting, timeliness and effectiveness of remedial actions)
ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES (2) Application of methods to other clinical networks within ACI Enhancements to education and training of cleaning workforce that service BMT units in NSW Improved transplant outcomes *Fewer HAIs *Reduced morbidity *Reduced mortality *Reduced healthcare costs
