Hydrocarbons Saturated Hydrocarbons – Only have single bonds Another name is alkane The alkanes hold the maximum number of hydrogen per carbon atom.
3 Types of Saturated Hydrocarbons 1) Straight chains • Ex: Butane C4 H10 2) Branched chains 3) Rings • Ex: Isobutane C4 H10-Ex: Cyclopentane & Cyclohexane
Isomers Did you notice Butane and Isobutane both had the formula C4H10? An isomer is a compound with the same molecular formula but different structural formulas.
Unsaturated Hydrocarbonswhen hydrocarbons have one or more multiple bonds. • If it has double bonds it is called an alkene • Ex: Ethene • If it has triple bonds it is called an alkyne • Ex: Ethyne
Common Hydrocarbon Prefixes • The prefix added to ane, ene or yne tells the number of carbon atoms in the compound. • 1 = meth • 2 = eth • 3 = prop • 4 = but • 5 = pent • ane = single bond • ene = double bond • yne = triple bond
