  3. 10 Commandments • After Three Months • Israelites arrive at Mt. Sinai • God reveals his full purpose for them: • Wants them to be a “kingdom of priests, a holy nation”

  4. 10 Commandments • Holy= set apart • They were supposed to be the example for everyone else • God gives them guidelines on how to do this-the 10 Commandments

  5. 10 Commandments 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall have no others before me. 2. Do not take the name of the Lord in vain. 3. Keep holy the Sabbath day. 4. Honor your father and mother. 5. You shall not kill. 6. You shall not commit adultery. 7. You shall not steal. 8. You shall not bear false witness. 9. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife. 10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.

  6. 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me • God should be first in our life • Some sins that fall under this commandment • Apostasy-total rejection of the faith • Presumption -thinking/acting like a person can save themselves w/o God

  8. 1. I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods before me • Divination -trying to make yourself like a god • Horoscopes • Astrology • Magic • Sacrilege • Treating things consecrated to God in an improper manner

  9. 2. Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain • Name of the Lord is holy • Name of God is to be used respectfully by those who love and honor Him • Jews did not use the name of God b/c they believed they were not worthy • Used to be a capital offense

  10. 2. Do not take the name of the Lord your God in vain • Anything that belongs to God we should respect • Sins against: • Improper use of God’s name • Blasphemy-speaking against God; hatred • Perjury-lying under oath • We should use God’s name as an oath only in serious matters

  11. Keep Holy the Sabbath day • God rested on the Sabbath, and since we are to be a reflection of God to the best of our ability, we should rest too • Honors the Resurrection as well-why we celebrate it on Sunday

Keep Holy the Sabbath day • What are our obligations? • Go to Mass • Also on holy days of obligation -Christmas (12/25) -Ascension (6th Thurs after Easter) -Mary Mother of God (Jan 1) -Immaculate Conception (Dec 8) -Assumption (Aug. 15) -All Saints (Nov 1) All can be on Sunday or Saturday evening (after 4:00)

  13. Keep Holy the Sabbath day • Also obliged to … • Rest from work • Family day • Also can do good deeds (visit the sick, etc) • If you must work, be sure to set some time aside to rest • Avoid making unnecessary demands on others that stop them from resting

  14. Why go to Mass? • Not every Mass will be deeply moving …. • Mortal sin to intentionally miss • Why? • E. Christians risked their lives for the Mass • Sacrifice –remembrance for them • Redemption is obtained • Proclaim the death of our Lord

  15. Why go to Mass? • Participation in the Salvation of the World • Participating in the Eucharist invites us to share in the experience of the world’s salvation in the death and resurrection of the Lord • Commit ourselves to working for God’s reign

  16. Why go to Mass? • Experiencing the glory of God • the glory of God is the human being fully alive, and that the human being fully alive is the one who is in Christ Jesus (St. Ireneaus) • God wants the world to look like human beings who give of themselves to others in faith, hope and love.

  17. Why go to Mass? • Discipline of faith • A third reason to bother is the formation of the habit of worshiping and glorifying God

  18. Why go to Mass? • Hearing the Scriptures communally • We need to experience the Scriptures both alone and in community • Hearing the Scriptures in community is a way of deepening as well as safeguarding our experience of God’s communication with us

  19. Why go to Mass? • Developing the moral life • The celebration of the Mass ought to help us in our development as moral human beings

  20. Why go to Mass? • Companionship with Christ • If I believe that Christ is the savior of the world, God incarnate, who has given his very self for me, then I want to share in the most intimate experience of self-giving—holy communion

  21. Why go to Mass? • Focusing my needs • To bring our brought deepest needs and desires to the table of the Lord, confident that they can be joined to Christ’s great act of intercession before the Father (Heb 7:25, 10:1-22)

  22. Why go to Mass? • Welcoming the kingdom • Every time we celebrate, we anticipate the banquet of God’s kingdom “when every tear will be wiped away.”

  23. Why go to Mass? • Pure joy • God invites us to the deepest peace and joy that is possible—sharing in His own divine life

  24. Honor your Father and Mother • Family is basic unit of society, and all possible should be done to keep it intact

  25. Honor your Father and Mother • Duties of children • Be grateful • Obey them-all moral requests • Take care of parents in old age, when sick, etc. • Not required/commanded to love parents –MUST Respect/Honor!

  26. Honor your Father and Mother • Duties of parents -Love their children -Provide for them -Educate them • Obedience to government • Respect for authority • Authority loaned by parents

  27. You shall not Kill • Respect for human life • WHY? • We are all made in the image and likeness of God!!! • Self-defense is okay, as long as you use a defense in proportion to the perpetrator • Those who are responsible for keeping people safe -allowed to defend themselves and others

  28. You shall not Kill • Offenses • Euthanasia • Suicide • Murder • Abortion • Having one • Encouraging one • Supporting those who perform them (ex: giving money)

  29. You shall not kill • Other Offenses against respect for life • Scandal • When you do something that leads another person to sin • Not taking care of yourself physically • Using drugs • Alcoholism, etc

  30. You shall not kill • Other offenses cont. • Drunkenness • Hatred • Inciting conflict (wars, arguments, etc.) • Kidnapping, terrorism, torture, etc. • hurts people emotionally and physically

  31. You shall not commit adultery • Men and women were both created in the image and likeness of God • Two purposes of sex • Procreation • Unity

  32. You shall not commit adultery • Chastity • keeping pure according to one’s state in life • Married (sex only with one’s spouse) • Single (celibacy until marriage) • Religious vows (permanent celibacy) • Chastity requires discipline and community support

  33. You shall not commit adultery • Sins against chastity • Lust • Thinking impure thoughts • Masturbation • Impure actions with yourself • Most likely involve impure thoughts • Fornication • Sex between two unmarried people • Adultery • Sex with someone other than your spouse

You shall not commit adultery • Sins against chastity cont. • Pornography • Looking at pictures, literature, websites, etc. that display the human body or sex act for the arousal of others • Why is this wrongif “Nobody gets hurt…”? • You are reducing person/people involved to objects • Using other people to fulfill your own lust

  35. You shall not commit adultery • Prostitution • Trading sex for money or objects • Offense against human dignity • Rape • Forcing sex on someone • Homosexuality • NOT a sin itself • People who believe themselves to be homosexual are called to a life of celibacy

You shall not steal • Taking things that don’t belong to you w/o their permission • Disrespectful of another person’s right to own property (whether physical, intellectual or creative) • Only time it is justified is when there is no other way to procure something needed for basic survival (ex: food)

  37. You shall not steal • Includes • Intentionally keeping things borrowed • Tax evasion • Paying unjust wages • Not honoring a contract • Plagiarism • Illegal downloading of music/movies/etc. • Gambling • When you are not able to support yourself or others

  38. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor • Misrepresenting the truth • Offenses • Disrespect for reputation • Saying bad things about people • Even if they are true, if there is no real need to point out that person’s faults, it’s wrong • Lying about someone

  39. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor • Other offenses • Lies of omission • Leaving important information out of what you are saying to make someone believe that something is true • Lies of commission • Deliberately saying something that isn’t true

  40. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife • Requires purity • Modesty • Dressing and acting in a way that will not lead anyone to think impure thoughts • Keeping as free as possible from the near occasion of sin • Tempting circumstances

  41. You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods • Wanting things that are not yours to an excessive extent • Greed • Envy • Wanting something so much that you resent that someone else has it • Can lead to serious crimes such as murder
