  4. CAtegories of STDs • Virus • HPV • (Human Papillomavirus) • Herpes • HIV/AIDS • Bacteria • Gonorrhea • Syphilis • Chlamydia

  5. What are some Symptoms of STDs • Abnormal discharge from the penis or vagina • Painful urination • Growths, sores or itching in the genital area • Lower abdominal pain • Skin rashes or sores • Enlarged lymph nodes

  6. What are some Long term effects? • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease • Infertility • Chronic pelvic pain • Damage to major body organs • Death

  7. Seek Treatment Immediately Bacteria Virus Incurable – you have them for life! Can be treated • Usually cured with antibiotics • Even if treated any damage caused already is permanent

  8. Testing How? A urine sample or a blood test depending on the STD • Where can you be tested? • Doctor’s office • Health Department (free) • Planned parenthood • Health centers on college campuses

  9. Why get Tested? • Know your STD status • The sooner you get treated the better. • Protect your partner – both need to get checked and treated.

  11. Ways to Reduce the risk of getting an std • Expanded definition of Abstinence • Use a condom correctly from start to finish (85% chance of protection) • Be monogamous • Eliminate the drug and alcohol factor • Get to know your partner and communicate with them BEFORE getting involved sexually

  12. Additional facts • You can have an STD with no signs or symptoms. • You can have more than one STD at a time. • A mother infected with an STD can pass it on to her baby. • A misdiagnosis can occur because symptoms are so similar for some of the STDs.
