Unit 1 The Universe and its Stars
Day 1 Bellringer • Put the following 7 stages of a medium-mass (Sun) star in order of how you think they would happen in the life-span of a star: • Variable Stage Main-sequence star • White Dwarf Stage Protostar • Giant Stage Planetary Nebula Stage • Dust and gases http://www.globalchange.umich.edu/globalchange1/current/lectures/topography/topography.gif
Interstellar matter Think-aloud: p. 683 • Between the stars is “the vacuum of space” • Nebula • Cloud of dust and gases • Two major types of nebulae • Bright nebula • Glows if it is close to a very hot star • Two types of bright nebulae • Emission nebula • Reflection nebula
A faint blue reflection nebula in the Pleiades star cluster • Figure 24.9
Interstellar matter • Nebula • Two major types of nebulae • Dark nebula • Not close to any bright star • Appear dark • Contains the material that forms stars and planets
Day 2 Bellringer • Bellringer: Explain the best you can the following statement; The Sun is an average star. • Today we’ll introduce hydrostatic equilibrium. • I’ll show sizes of stars and planets relative to each other. • We’ll group up and start the project to develop a model (poster) to illustrate the lifespan of a medium-mass star (Sun)
Day 3 Bellringer • Get out your work to turn into the tray. • Turn in the following to the appropriate tray. Make sure your first, and last name name, date, and class period is on every data sheet: • Learning Target Inventory data sheet • Bellringers (4 of them) • 15 gravity questions data sheet • P. 699, #12, 14-20 homework.
Day 4 Bellringer • Sit with your groups in one of the areas of your choice. • You’ll continue on your Star “life-span” posters today and tomorrow. • Go ahead and get out your project work and continue work on it.
Day 5 Bellringer • One of my goals this year is for you guys to become better “independent learners.” Describe what does that means to you. • Once you’ve finished your bellringer continue on with working on your poster.
