  1. Rathbun Lake Watershed: Benefits and Challenges of Targeting Soil and Water Conservation Society “It’s the Water Workshop” September 2005

  2. SWCS “It’s the Water Workshop” • Targeting to Protect Rathbun Lake…. • Identify contaminants impairing water quality based on results of monitoring activities • Prioritize sources of contaminants causing water quality impairment using watershed assessment • Concentrate water quality protection efforts on highest priority sources of contaminants of greatest concern Rathbun Land and Water Alliance

  3. SWCS “It’s the Water Workshop” • Benefits of Targeting…. • Most effective use of limited resources available for water quality protection - Less than 17% of land in the watershed delivers more than 70% of the sediment and phosphorus to Rathbun Lake - BMPs for priority land in targeted sub-watersheds will reduce: sediment delivery by close to 1.5 tons per acre per year phosphorus delivery by estimated 6 pounds per acre per year - Cost of BMPs estimated at $552 per acre and $376 per ton: average annual costs of $28 per acre and $19 per ton Rathbun Land and Water Alliance

  4. SWCS “It’s the Water Workshop” • Challenges of Targeting…. • Planning and applying BMPs for a single, priority resource concern – water quality • Limited financial resources of landowners • Relationships between landowners and farm operators • Landowner age • Educational needs of landowners Rathbun Land and Water Alliance

  5. SWCS “It’s the Water Workshop” • Overcoming the Challenges…. • Increase staff and landowner familiarity with and confidence in targeting procedures • Promote Iowa’s Local Water Protection Program’s low interest loans for BMPs • Watershed outreach: Rathbun Lake Protectors Program • Alternative approaches that may achieve long-term water quality protection at lower costs: - Support sustainable changes in use of priority land - Financial incentives based on benefits achieved Rathbun Land and Water Alliance
