  2. Mental Disorders Reading 1) Before understanding the circumstances of Mara’s behavior, does it seem likely that she would be diagnosed with a mental disorder? Explain your answer. Yes, because she is exhibiting behavior that is different, deviant, and abnormal. 2) Does an understanding of the circumstances of Mara’s behavior change whether or not she should be diagnosed with a mental disorder? Why or why not? An understanding of the circumstances of Mara’s behavior makes her behavior and reactions seem rather normal responses to her situation.

  3. Mental Disorders Reading 3) What is the difference between a mental disorder and a mental illness? Give an example to support your answer. A mental illness implies that a physical disease (brain abnormality, other malfunctioning organ) is responsible for a person’s abnormal behavior, whereas a mental disorder includes all types of psychological abnormalities, including those that may not be associated with a particular physical ailment. Alzheimer’s Disease would be considered a mental illness whereas depression would be considered a mental disorder.

  8. What causes mental disorders? (THEN) • Medieval period in Europe (A.D. ~500) • People with mental disorders are possessed by devils or evil spirits • 15th-17th century • Mental disorders are due to physical ailments (and NOT caused by devil)

(NOW) • Late 19th- early 20th century: 2 perspectives • Somatogenic perspective (medical model) • Physical ailments cause psychological problems • Psychogenic perspective • Psychological problems cause physical ailments • Mental disorders are caused by fear, loss, love and other emotions.

Modern Day (21st century) Abnormal Psychology • Mental disorders result from two factors: • genetic vulnerabilities (DNA) exposed by environmental stressors (drugs, abuse, malnutrition) • Mental disorders are more common in cases of abuse (physical, sexual or emotional) or neglect of children during the developmental years. • Traumatic brain injury, certain viral infections, substance misuse may increase the risk of developing certain mental disorders.
