Yes, because she is exhibiting behavior that is different, deviant, and abnormal. 2) Does an understanding of the circumstances of Mara’s behavior change whether or not she should be diagnosed with a mental disorder? Why or why not? An understanding of the circumstances of Mara’s behavior makes her behavior and reactions seem rather normal responses to her situation.

A mental illness implies that a physical disease (brain abnormality, other malfunctioning organ) is responsible for a person’s abnormal behavior, whereas a mental disorder includes all types of psychological abnormalities, including those that may not be associated with a particular physical ailment. Alzheimer’s Disease would be considered a mental illness whereas depression would be considered a mental disorder.

What causes mental disorders? (THEN) • Medieval period in Europe (A.D. ~500) • People with mental disorders are possessed by devils or evil spirits • 15th-17th century • Mental disorders are due to physical ailments (and NOT caused by devil)

(NOW) • Late 19th- early 20th century: 2 perspectives • Somatogenic perspective (medical model) • Physical ailments cause psychological problems • Psychogenic perspective • Psychological problems cause physical ailments • Mental disorders are caused by fear, loss, love and other emotions.

Modern Day (21st century) Abnormal Psychology • Mental disorders result from two factors: • genetic vulnerabilities (DNA) exposed by environmental stressors (drugs, abuse, malnutrition) • Mental disorders are more common in cases of abuse (physical, sexual or emotional) or neglect of children during the developmental years. • Traumatic brain injury, certain viral infections, substance misuse may increase the risk of developing certain mental disorders.
