Government Legislation • Consumer Product Safety Act - gives the Consumer Product Safety Commission the power to develop safety standards and pursue recalls for products • Federal Trade Commission Act - created the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to prevent unfair competition, deceptive acts, regulate trade, etc. • Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to prepare industry codes on consumer protection issues

Government Agencies • Food and Drug Administration: The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Public Health Service, which is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services. • Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which was created by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, is the federal agency that has the responsibility to promote equal opportunity in employment through administrative and judicial enforcement of the federal civil rights laws and through education and technical assistance. • Consumer Product Safety Commission was established to protect the public against unreasonable risks of injury from consumer products; to assist consumers in evaluating the comparative safety of consumer products; to develop uniform safety standards for consumer products and to minimize conflicting state and local regulations; and to promote research and investigation into the causes and prevention of product-related deaths, illnesses, and injuries

Private Organizations • FDIC-Consumers' financial rights are protected by federal and state laws and regulations covering many services offered by financial institutions. • BBB On-Line-brings- BBB services to Internet businesses. • National Fraud Information Center-NFIC is the only nationwide toll-free hot line for consumers to get advice about telephone solicitations and report telemarketing fraud to law enforcement agencies. The Internet Fraud Watch offers consumers advice about promotions in cyber space and routes reports of suspected Internet fraud to the appropriate government agencies.

  5. Primary Role • Government – The government passes laws to protect rights; uses federal agencies to enforce laws; and establishes commissions to deal with consumer complaints. Federal and state governments are good at regulating manufacturing, advertising, and sales practices, but do not have the time or money to deal with the individual consumer. • Private Organizations – Private organizations have taken up the task of protecting individual consumers and forcing governmental agencies into action.

  7. consumers • In a free enterprise the consumers determines what is in business, because they are buying what the businesses produce. And if the businesses don’t produce what they want then they wont survive in the industry

  8. Supply and Demand • Supply is what the businesses produce and demand is what the consumers want. When the demand goes up so will the price. Consumers determine the price.
