Status in 3GPP2 • QUALCOMM, VZW, Ericsson, ZTE, and Bridgewater jointly proposed a work item ‘CDMA/GPRS Data Roaming Support’ toTSG-X in December 2003. • It has been approved as a work item by the group. • QUALCOMM brought a high level design for CDMA/GPRS Data Roaming to TSG-X in February 2004. But, due to lack of time in the meeting, it was not discussed in detail yet. • QUALOMM and interested companies will bring a contribution for the Workplan of CDMA/GPRS Data Roaming in TSG-X March meeting.
Way Forward in 3GPP2 • QUALCOMM provides a contribution (X30-20040209-007) which describes technical details for CDMA/GSM data roaming high level design to CDG IRT as FYI. • CDG IRT should send a liaison to indicate their interest (if the team agrees) to TSG-X. It will expedite the process of standardization. • Carriers inputs toTSG-X are highly required to move forward.
Requirements • Roaming Direction • Both directions (CDMA2000 <-> GPRS> will be supported. • Authentication and Authorization • The roaming MS shall be authenticated and authorized by the home network. • Roaming Connectivity • The roaming MS will establish connectivity to the Internet through the serving system directly, or through the serving and home systems. • Data Integrity and Privacy of signaling and bearer data will be supported. • Accounting • The accounting information for the MS’s roaming access will be made available to the home system. • A set of accounting record types will be defined for CDMA2000/GPRS data roaming.
Principles • Enhance the current Interworking and Interoperability Function (IIF) [J-STD-038] to support CDMA2000/GPRS packet data roaming. • No change is required to the GPRS standards • Minimize changes to the CDMA2000 packet data standards [IS-835].
Interworking and Interoperability Function • IIF provides service access when a subscriber operates in a visited network whose signaling and network protocols are different from the home network’s protocols. • Functions are: • GSM HLR/VLR and ANSI-41 HLR/VLR emulation for registration • GGSN/SGSN and HA/FA emulation for bearer connectivity in Mobile IP • GGSN/SGSN and LAC/LNS emulation for bearer connectivity in Simple IP • AAA emulation for accounting • Required functions are different in each roaming scenario.
Roaming Scenarios • Mobile IPv4 in the GPRS foreign mode • CDMA2000 packet data native subscriber operates Mobile IPv4 in a visited GPRS system • Simple IP in the GPRS foreign mode • CDMA2000 packet data native subscriber operates Simple IP in a visited GPRS system • Mobile IPv4 in the CDMA2000 packet data foreign mode • GPRS native subscriber operates Mobile IPv4 in a visited CDMA2000 packet data system • Simple IP in the CDMA2000 packet data foreign mode • GPRS native subscriber operates Simple IP in a visited CDMA2000 packet data system
