  3. History • Invented by Tony Fadell • 1st prototypes could only hold 10 songs • 1st iPod October 23, 2001 • 1st mp3 player to use a scroll wheel • 1st finished iPod was 5 GB • 1st cost $400

Flash Drive • Hard Drive players range from 3GB up to 100GB • Most fall in the 8GB to 30GB range • Flash drives top out at 6GB • Most fall in the 512MB to 4 GB • Chipsets and use • First iPod was a hard drive holding 100 songs • Today they hold: over 20,000 songs • Today’s flash players: video tops out at 15 fps, fm tuners, voice recording • Today’s hard drives: video, radio, voice recording, video recording, mass storage

  8. Hard Drive VS. Flash Drive • Both have same frequency responses • Flash screen: 1.5 in • Hard drive screen: 2.5 in • 2004: iPod sales are 82% of all digital music players and 92% of all hard-drive based players • In the future: Bluetooth technology, Max storage, PDA?

  9. iPod (4th Generation) 20GB • The 4th generation iPod is also known as the photo iPod. • It was the first iPod to have a color screen. • The iPod can play MP3, WAV, M4A/AAC, Protected AAC, AIFF, Audible audiobook, and Apple Losslessaudio file formats.

The 4th gen. iPods have displays which use high quality anti-aliased graphics and text. with sliding animations. • These iPods have five buttons integrated underneath the scroll wheel, an innovation which allows for an uncluttered interface. • It can display documents. • *limited PDA capabilities* • *Anti-Aliasing*

Connectivity • Originally iPods used firewire to connect to the host computer. • The 4th generation iPod allowed recharging via USB and eventually Apple started shipping iPods with USB cables instead of FireWire. • USB is Slower than firewire USB transfers at a rate of 12 Mbit/s Firewire transfers at a rate of 400 Mbit/s

  13. IPOD Nano • Introduced Sept. 2005 • Types: • 2GB – 500 songs, $149 • 4GB – 1000 songs, $199 • 8GB – 2000 songs, $249 • Uses Flash Drive • Screen – 1.5 inches • Battery Life – 14 hrs of audio

  14. 30GB IPOD (video) • Storage – in between 5,000 and 7,000 songs • In between 1,000 and 2,000 videos • 30% thinner than previous 30 GB iPod • $299.99 • Player type: Hard disk MP3 player, Portable media player • 2.5 inch screen • Battery Life – 15 hours of audio

  15. Conclusion With all these variations of the iPod there is one meant for everyone. Depending on your needs you can find the one right for you. There are also many features besides playing music the iPod can be used for. Some of these features not utilized by everyone include playing video’s and saving photo’s to the higher priced models. Podcast’s are free video’s that users can get by subscribing to specific ones that interest them. You can watch anything from the news to animations on the go and for free!
