Mean, Median, Mode, and RangeObjective: How do we calculate the mean, median, mode and range for a set of data? http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=for%20teaching%20mean%20mode%20range&tnr=21&vid=4967280528654386&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts3.mm.bing.net%2Fvideos%2Fthumbnail.aspx%3Fq%3D4967280528654386%26id%3D18a9fc4c19a7973c9cbdee15f50783b0%26bid%3D%252b4pfzl8%252fu1iORg%26bn%3DThumb%26url%3Dhttp%253a%252f%252fwww.youtube.com%252fwatch%253fv%253doNdVynH6hcY&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DoNdVynH6hcY&sigr=11adi9juf&newfp=1&tit=Mean+Median+and+Mode+Song
Mean Temperatures in November: 52, 69, 38, 38, 58 To find the mean or average of a set of data you must first add all the numbers in the set. 52+69+38+38+58= 255 Next, you divide the total by how many numbers are in the set. In this case there are 5 numbers. 255 ÷5 = 51 So the average temperature for November is 51
Median Temperatures in November: 52,69,38,38,58 To find the median we must put the numbers in order from least to greatest. 38, 38, 52, 58, 69 Next, we find the number in the middle 38, 38, 52, 58, 69 The middle number is 52 so the median temperature for November is 52.
Mode Temperatures in November: 52, 69, 38, 38, 58 To find the mode you find the number that occurs the most. 52, 69, 38, 38, 58 The number 38 happens two times. So 38 is the mode temperature for November.
Range Temperatures in November: 52, 69, 38, 38, 58 To find the range for a set of data you need to find the difference between the biggest and smallest number in the data set. The largest number is 69, the smallest number is 38. 69 – 38 = 31 So the range of temperatures in November is 31
Let’s Try Together • The first week of March the temperatures were beautiful. On your paper make a data set
78, 71, 78, 65, 56, 76, 64 • Find the mean or average:
78, 71, 78, 65, 56, 76, 64 • Find the median:
78, 71, 78, 65, 56, 76, 64 • Find the mode:
78, 71, 78, 65, 56, 76, 64 • Find the range:
Your Turn! • Each group will get a weather forecast. • Your job is for each of you to work together to find the mean, median, mode and range for your set of data and record it on your group data sheet.
