Rio ’92 results • Rio Declaration (26 principles) • Agenda 21 (40 chapters, Part 1 on socio-econ, Part 2 on ENR mgt for dev, Part 3 on major groups, Part 4 on means of implementation) • UNFCCC (not just about CO2 up there) • UNFCBD (not just about flowers, birds & the bees) • Statement on Forest Principles (not just about saving trees) • UNCCD (not just about deserts) deferred to 1995 ganiserrano/prrm/rio+20

Following Rio ‘92 • 1993---human rights for all (Vienna) • 1994---population (Cairo) • 1995---social development (Copenhagen) gender equality & women empowerment (Beijing) • 1996---right to shelter, sustainable HS (Istanbul) & food security for all (Rome) • 1997---EFA, lifelong learning (Hamburg) • 2000---rights & freedoms (Millennium Declaration & MDGs) , +5s, +10s etc. etc. etc…… • Beyond 2015—from MDGs to SDGs? ganiserrano/prrm/rio+20

The RIO+20 process • From 2009 UNGA resolution---3 Prepcoms, regional preparatory meetings (RPMs), parallel major groups’ events and SecGen’s specials, leading up to the June 2012 summit itself • SecGen’s choice references for final document: ‘The Future We Want’; ‘Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A future worth choosing’ thru experts’ groups & HLPs ganiserrano/prrm/rio+20

  9. Why the agenda? • Greening Take Two: we failed to green our act in the last 20 years, so let’s try again. • Maybe it’s institutions: national consensus & restructuring ; UN didn’t act as one, so now let’s do ‘One UN’ this time around. ganiserrano/prrm/rio+20

Indicators: back to basic • % food supply grown organically • % streams you can drink from safely • Average age of trees in the forest • Population trends of migrating songbirds • Shortened food miles (distance between where food is grown and consumed) • Average distance travelled by a person each year • % elections when you vote for a politician you really trust and like • Average distance between living places of members of extended family • Average number of minutes spent everyday in prayer, meditation, or quiet time • % of “clowns” or people with sense of humor in a village or community • % of people who say they have “enough” ganiserrano/prrm/rio+20
