History of CHA-CHA
Also called the Cha Cha Cha, this unmistakable dance originated in Cuba in the 1940s. http://dance.about.com/od/partnerdancestyles/qt/Cha_Cha.htm
Composer and violinist Enrique Jorrin developed the dance as a variant of the Mambo and Rumba. http://dance.about.com/od/partnerdancestyles/qt/Cha_Cha.htm
The name is onomatopoeic, derived from the sound of dancers' shoes as they shuffled around the floor. http://dance.about.com/od/partnerdancestyles/qt/Cha_Cha.htm
This dance has been popular in Europe from before the turn of the century. In fact, it is listed in the program of the Finishing Assembly in 1898 of Dancie Niell at Coupar Angus in Scotland (Hood, 1980).
Cha Cha Chasse A Cha Cha Cha Chasse is composed of three changes of weight with a close on the second and may be performed sideward or forward.
The Fan Fan is an open position, whereby man and lady are positioned perpendicular to each other, lady on man's left side, with a left hand-right hand hold.
The Aleman The Alemana is a type of Underarm Turn to Right, typically commenced in Fan position.
Hand to Hand Hand-to-Hand can be thought of as a "New Yorker in reverse". Partners alternate from left to right side-by-side position, but instead of taking a forward break, they take a back break. The turn on count one is taken in the opposite direction than that of the New Yorker.
Hockey Stick The Hockey Stick is a type of progressive underarm turn commenced in Fan position. It gets its name from the distinctive hockey stick-shaped path traveled by the lady during the course of the figure.
Spot Turns Spot Turns as a Basic element can be danced in a variety of ways: Man and lady turning at the same time, man turning lady underarm, or one partner turning while the other dances a Time Step, just to name a few.
The New York Is a very popular figure in basic Cha Cha. New Yorks are breaks which alternate from left to right side-by-side position by way of the Chasse, using the basic rhythm 2, 3, 4&1. Both left and right foot break forward.
