  2. We have known for a long time how much money 1 hectare of lumber is worth, but we don’t know how much 1 hectare of uncut forests would be worth to the planet…..until now. • Introducing……….an ecological footprint!!

  3. Ecological Footprint • An ecological footprint tells us what ourimpact (how we affect something) is on the planet • It represents the land area necessary to support our lifestyle (for resources, food, water, energy, and waste)

  4. There are only 15.71 global hectares available per person. This means we are overshooting the Earth's biological capacity by nearly 50%. To sustain present levels of consumption, we would need:

Ecological Footprint • World Average – 23 global hectares (gha) • Biggest Footprint – United Arab Emirates: 233 gha • Smallest Footprint – Bangladesh: 2 gha • Average Canadian Footprint – 83 global hectares • Canada has the 5th highest footprint in the world! • Why is Canada’s average footprint so big? --------------------------------------------------------------------------

  6. Ecological Footprint • We consume ….. • 2.0 gha for cropland • 1.0 gha for pasture land • 3.0 gha for forests • 1.0 gha for fisheries • 0.5 gha for built space (housing, buildings) • 76.0 gha for energy Canada = 83 global hectares

  7. Footprint Calculation • We’re going to go to the lab to calculate our footprints.

  8. Now That I Know My Ecological Footprint……… • Our Class Results: • Calculate the class average (add up and divide by the number of people in the class) • Describe how your footprint compares to the rest of the class. • What is the Canadian average EF?

  9. What footprint size could the world sustain? • How does Canada’s footprint compare to the the rest of the world’s? • What’s wrong with the numbers? • What can you do to help make Canada’s EF lower?
