Hooke’s Law • k is called the spring constantit describes how “stiff” the spring is (stiffer spring higher k) • The negative sign gives the direction of the springs pull/push… it is in the opposite direction of the stretch or compression • If you only need magnitude, drop the negative sign and use F = kx
Example 6-7 A bulldozer stretches a spring with a spring constant of 1300 N/m a distance of 0.45 m in the positive x-direction. Find the magnitude and direction of the force that the spring exerts on both the wall and the bulldozer.
