Why a Web-Based Organic Chemistry Homework Program? • Textbook publishers provide solutions manuals • Knowing the answer ≠ knowing how to answer • Logistics of paper-based homework
Why Not use an Existing Homework Program? • Most require text, numerical, or multiple-choice input, not chemical structures (exceptions: OWL, ChemCoach) • Most do not provide feedback that is tailored to a student’s erroneous reasoning (exception: Quantum Tutors) • Don’t permit instructors to modify or add to database of questions In other words, not suited for organic chemistry!
Key Features of ACE • Students draw structures in response to questions • ACE provides response-specific feedback but withholds the answer • Database of >1600 questions, each with feedback for many different kinds of responses • Instructors may author questions or edit existing ones • Greater coverage of certain topics desired • Error discovered in database question • Unanticipated incorrect responses that warrant specific feedback not already provided • Grades & students’ final responses automatically recorded • May be used with any textbook
