Pro Pidgin • Pidgin is an essential part of the Hawaiian culture • Should be taught and expressed • Less than ¾ of the state’s eighth graders were writing at or above a basic achievement letters but that Pidgin is not the sole cause of this performance. • Hawaiian identity
Anti Pidgin • Critics of pidgin say that teaching pidgin is a disservice to the students. • People speak “real” English in jobs around the world • Pidgin impairs student’s grammar • Gov. Ben Cavatino said he appreciated being corrected when he spoke pidgin so that he could learn good english.
Other Perspectives • Most native children growing up in Hawaii are exposed to pidgin and they speak it with their families and friends • Pidgin is an essential part of this culture that should be expressed. • People with speech disorders can be very smart. Most speech disorders are not the result of mental disorders.

Implications of other perspectives • Could change the way education is taught in Hawaii. • Society becoming more aware of speech disorders.
