  1. History of Evolutionary Thought

  2. Pre-Darwin • Early Greek philosophers – life changes • Aristotle – ScalaNaturae • Judeo-Christian culture – literal interpretation • Lamarck – Fossil interpretation  life evolves • Darwin’s voyage…

  3. The H.M.S. Beagle • 22 years old • Naturalist to chart the South American coast

  4. What he saw…

  5. Influences… • Lyell – natural forces affect Earth’s surface • Malthus – overproduction of young

  6. Darwin’s Observations and Inferences • Observation 1: Members of a population often vary in their inherited traits • Observation 2: All species are capable of producingmore offspring than the environment can support • Inference 1: Individuals whose inherited traits give them a higher probability of surviving and reproducing in a given environment tend to leave more offspring than other individuals • Inference 2: This unequal production of offspring will lead to the accumulation of favorable traits in a population over generations

  7. Your assignment? • Use the photos provided to inspire a story on natural selection… • Indicate what the variations in the population are… • Indicate what the stressor is in the environment • Describe which variations are well adapted
