The National External Diploma Program (NEDP) is a competency-based, applied performance assessment system that expects adults to demonstrate their ability in a series of simulations that parallel job and life situations. Participants are evaluated against a criterion of excellenceinstead of by comparison to others, take responsibility for acquiring instruction by using existing community resources, and achieve mastery of all the competencies required, plus an occupational, or specialized skill.

  4. “Adult-friendly” Components • Allows learners to self pace learning and processing work so it appeals to English Language Learners • Flexible meeting times & locations • Meetings are private, confidential and one-to-one • Candidates develop study and learning skills making them independent learners • Candidates develop and must demonstrate college and career readiness skills • Learners know exactly what they are expected to know and do • Continuous feedback to participants • Non-traditional models of assessment • Multiple opportunities to do again • Average completion time is less than six months once in assessment

Assessment 70 Generalized Competencies in 10 Competency Areas: • Communication and Media Literacy • Applied Math/Numeracy • Information and Communication Technology • Cultural Literacy • Health Literacy • Civic Literacy and Community Participation • Geography and History • Consumer Awareness and Financial Literacy • Science • Twenty-First Century Workplace All competencies must be demonstrated with 100% accuracy

  6. How do some students benefit from the NEDP? • Competency-based assessment • Untimed testing • Skills demonstrated over a period of time • Opportunity to chunk what needs to be learned (demonstrated) • Assessment activities are contextual

The NEDP Process from the Agency’s Perspective All Rhode Island Agency wanting to refer students to NEDP must have: • at least one member of the staff trained to facilitate an NEDP Cohort • instructional staff willing to support the NEDP learning (competency -based instruction/formative-based assessment methodology) • Information provided about NEDP as part of the agency’s intake process

The NEDP Process from the Students Perspective All Rhode Island residents wanting to participate in NEDP must: • Be enrolled in an NEDP Assessment agency • Learn content through an ABE/ASE instructional program (independent and/or through an agency) • Take responsibility for his/her own learning • Score 236 on the CASAS 187R and 236 on the CASAS 15 M • Attend a two-session NEDP Orientation • Attend an NEDP Cohort (10 sessions)

  9. Flipped Teaching/Classroom Theory Model Flip teaching (or flipped classroom) is a form of blended learning which encompasses any use of technology to leverage the learning in a classroom, so a teacher can spend more time interacting with students instead of lecturing.

  11. BLENDED INSTRUCTION Three learning modalities that work together include: • Classroom instruction learning or face-to-face • Distance Learning instruction or learning from the Internet • Independent or cooperative Learning
